This post is for my Calendar 2020 in the making for which I choose twenty photos taken in the same month one year ago.
As you are reading this, my uncle, bestia and I are on the way to Tuscany, beating post-holiday traffic, road works, heat, storms (I hope not!), and the like.
Just two more weeks and Crystal and Pedro are coming from Oregon, yeah! And then we will do the same trip, just in the opposite direction, so that they will be able to visit both my countries.
Here are memories from last August in the shape of twenty hard-pressed favourites, meaning that I first had a selection of 90 photos and then had to make the final cut with a heavy heart.
The subjects go from uncle’s garden and two architectural wonders in Ljubljana towards Kranjska Gora and the Julian Alps where we spent four wonderful days courtesy of the State of Slovenia and its Covid-19 coupons for every adult citizen. This year there is another coupon worth 100 Eur. (Last year it was 300 Eur but it was only valid for overnight accommodation. This year it covers restaurants and culture too.)
With the last five photos we come back to Italy. Flavia and I had a memorable getaway to Sutri, Lake Vico and Lake Bracciano, and these are just a few wonders from that day.
Welcome to revisit my previous August with me and who knows, one day we may stroll together for real.
The end of our annual garden card tournament. Father was the winner last year. The surprising Ljubljana door that I wouldn’t have known if Flavia hadn’t found it first. Another example of Ljubljana architecture. Secession or Art Nouveau, I presume. Then we went northwest towards the mountains. Gozd Martuljek was the first stop. A friendliest cat greeted us there. Kranjska Gora, our home for three nights. At first it was rainy and murky and cold but it cleared. This is where we stayed. Hotel Alpina, where the closest way to town is down the meadow. Really. Mojstrana, another town nearby with magnificent mountains all around when you can see them. Lake Jasna is marvellous. Fresh and serene and bestia appreciates it. Amore is missing a jacket. With borrowed jacket from my sister at the Nordic centre Planica when they fly with skis. Decisions, decisions… An alpine sunset. On the way to Piran over the Vršič Pass we passed the Russian Chapel, built by Russian prisoners of war. A spot to stop and marvel. Dad’s head goes well with the Alps. When you come down the Vršič pass, there is Soča (Isonzo), fresh enough to drink. Back home to Tuscany and the Orbetello lagoon. The heat awaits. A random find on the way to Sutri. Church of Saint Anthony Abbott near Monte Romano is as ancient as I am. Sutri is officially one of the prettiest Italian towns. A swan goose, Chinese by origin, is far from home upon Lake Bracciano. Sign of the times.

Thank you, Deborah! Those were wonderful four days. Back home now and it’s parched and scorched and hellish.

Oh my, when I think of Italy and Tuscany the words you’ve used to describe your return isn’t at all what comes to my mind!! 😂
Well, it’s hot, parched, and smoky as hell here! I’m hoping the wind clears out some smoke so I can at least walk up to the gate today.
I’m am glad you’re home safely! 🥰

Never go to the mountains without a jacket, sth every highlander knows.
(Kranjska Gora is breath-taking. The peaks and those lakes…wow)

Hihi, right, Bojana. Amore would prefer not go to any mountain ever if he would be consulted. Plus it was August. In Rome you don’t even need panties in August.
