Love Is First

Here is a pantoum that I wrote recently. I feel April coming up when I’ll do it every day, write a poem. And later, some personal disclosure.

Love Is First

You learn something, meet somebody,
at first it’s always new and good.
Every love is first at something,
everything you love is first.

At first it’s always new and good.
You hide discomfort, ignore pain.
Everything you love is first,
every first love is a birth.

You hide discomfort, ignore pain,
wishing it to melt away.
Every first love is a birth.
Is this the last one, one that lasts?

Wishing it to melt away,
you learn something, meet somebody.
Is this the last one, one that lasts?
Every love is first at something.

Next, have a look at these fellows, who are my first and/or eternal loves, and see how many you know. I’d put them on my wall right now all over again.

They are Richard, Christopher, John, Jim and Eddie.

I wrote to one of them and he never wrote back. I now see that he died in 2017. I saw and heard two of them on stage more than once. I visited the grave of one more than once. And I watched a ski race in Slovenia standing next to the remaining one for a while.

It was right here in Podkoren near Kranjska Gora, in the corner underneath Austria and next to Italy. We returned there with my parents in August 2020, some 40 years after the fact. Here is the slope and the views in all the other three directions. Read the story below.

It was the Superman himself who was shooting an aviator movie near Kranjska Gora. We were there for the race. I dragged my parents to the hotel where he was staying and we simply waited in comfortable chairs for what felt like hours. When he entered the lobby, he ran and slid on the floor like on a skateboard. What an entrance! That was enough for me. We left soon after.

The next day my father arranged so that I could watch the World Cup skiing race in the VIP section and collect skiers’ autographs. Suddenly I realised that the man standing next to me, clapping with his huge hands in his huge gloves, sporting a moustache and a tone of muscles, was none other than the Superman! I needed a while before I dared ask him to sign. He smiled and did it and that was it.

A Slovenian in Italy for love. Blogger, photographer, translator and would-be writer who would be a writer if she wrote. Plus reluctant but emerging poet. Beware.

    1. Ahh, thanks, Judy. 🙂 That’s our dog bestia in the garden of my parents in Piran on the Slovenian coast. This is such a happy place and I miss it but will see it again in the summer. There are kiwis and grapes and figs and all sorts of vegetables growing there in permissive fashion, just like they let grow up their daughters. 😀

    1. Thanks, Bonnie Rae. 🙂 I’m glad that you like the poem. You made me realise that I never disclosed their identities. 😀 So now I added their names in the captions. Curious about your crushes!

  1. I’m so glad that when you got to meet your ‘love’ he didn’t disappoint 🙂 I remember those days of photos on the bedroom wall so well! I’m a little older than you so mine were different – Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, Robert Redford, Marc Bolan …

    1. Hahah!! Nobody has claimed him yet so he is yours. I chose a more recent photo of him on purpose, just because it’s not fair how some men can age. 😉 I read his autobiography recently. Rather eye-opening. and eyebrow raising. 😀 Thanks for your vote, Aimer!

  2. You have Christopher Reeve’s autograph? That’s amazing! I’ve heard from every source that he was a really good man. How good of your father to make it so you could be there, too. Of all of your choices, I had no crushes except for John Taylor. Ooh la la. Too bad Aimer got him first. My posters on the wall were…early on Shawn Cassidy and Erik Estrada. Then Tom Cruise started showing up in those teen magazines, all dreamy in the early 80s. Then after that I was old enough to purchase teen magazines for myself, and I had crushes on John Taylor, Corey Hart, and Eddie Van Halen. Thanks for the door! and for your friendship all these years.

    1. Bahhaha!!! MY John Taylor is not up for grabs!! 😉 Neither Shawn nor Erik rings any immediate bells. I have to google them. (Ahh, Shawn is 63 years old now. And Erik looks exactly like Pedro!!) The other three that you mention you may have for yourself. 🙂 But I’m so glad to hear that Christopher was a good man. It certainly appeared so. I must admit that his autograph has remained in one of my memory boxes in Slovenia… Thank you, Crystal, very much likewise. ❤

  3. Hahahahahaha! Brilliant fun reading this. I approve of all your crushes, Eddie Vedder especially. I had a crush on Christopher Reeve as Superman when I was a wee thing. And your poem is lovely. I love these lines:

“Every love is first at something,
    everything you love is first.”

“Is this the last one, one that lasts?
Every love is first at something.”
