Yesterday I remembered that it was the last day of the month so I made sure that my last couple of photos make a good piece of evidence of my lens trouble.
This is something that has been happening more and more often. Have a look at my penultimate and last July photo:
By the end of this post you’ll be as frustrated as I am. Recently my camera (Nikon D5000) keeps producing white blotches together with the error warning and instruction to release the shutter button again, which sometimes works and my next photo is good, but at other times doesn’t and the whiteness continues.
Here are some further examples of the times when it worked, all from heavenly Piran on the Slovenian coast where I’ve been staying in my parents’ home the last two months. Included please find a chandelier made of sparkling wine bottles, my father’s idea. All the photos have only been cropped, straightened and resized, with no other editing.
There is no photo studio here in Piran, so I can’t show it to an expert. Can it be a result of my fall when I fell on top of my camera hard but with no visible damage? At first I thought it was happening because my battery was low, since once recharged the issue got better but not for long. It is mightily frustrating. This Tamron lens (18-200) is not even one year old (but its papers are back in Tuscany). If you have any thought on it, I’m all ears.

My Nikon has been giving me fits too. Yours looks like an exposure issue. I’m guessing you have reset back to factory settings? Someone also suggested I make sure I had the latest firmware update. I hope you find the solution because I love your photos! 💖

I wish I could help, Manja. I had a problem with my Nikon for the greater part of a year. Finally, I pulled out the manual (I am not a fan of reading directions) and realized I had accidentally hit a button to cause my problem. Tada! Problem fixed. I hope yours is as easy. And doesn’t take as long as mine did.

I had a similar issue with my Nikon, though I didn’t have a fall. Hubby reset it to the factory defaults and it was ok then. I try to touch nothing now

Yes that is frustrating. The solution others have suggested may work. Was that the camera that Crystal? gifted you? I would say good Last Photos but….well…..I sense your frustrations.
Is everything OK with you and amore? You seem to be staying in Piran longer than usual. Is mum and dad doing well?

Yes, this is the camera I gifted! I had a similar problem with an old Tamron lens a few years ago, so I am eager to hear what Manja learns about this. In my case, the lens was old and the overexposure happened quickly. Over the course of a couple of days, all the photos became so overexposed they were unuseable. I was told my lens was bad, so I threw it away and got a new one. But if there is a fix I am sure it would come in handy to know.

It could have been mould in the lens. It costs a lot to clean but if it is an expensive lens then it is worth it

Manja, this seems to be an issue with the camera rather than with the lens. Perhaps the fall (hope you’re OK!) knocked the mirror out of position (easy fix) or damaged the shutter curtains (bad news). If you’re DIY inclined, google “Nikon D5000 Press shutter release button again” for instructions!

I hope you find an answer to the problems with the camera. I agree with others that it looks exposure related and more likely to be the camera itself rather than the lens. Beyond that I can’t help – sorry!

Check that the mirror hasn’t been moved out of position – it could be binding on the part of the mechanism. I believe they’re usually held in place by clips so you might be able to gently ease it back into the correct location.

I have no suggestions but my sympathy. I had a similar experience when my camera lens decided it wasn’t going to focus on any thing unless I zoomed all the way and then back in again. I have fiddled about with the settings but I am not convinced that I have fixed it.

You know, I thought the photos were excellent, especially the cloud shots so I honestly didn’t notice any flaws! And I hope it wasn’t a bad fall? Wishing you lots of restorative energy ❤

Oh Sunra Nina, is it clear that there is a pair of photos in each comparison? This means that I need to take twice as many photos to get the same amount of decent ones. The first photos in all the pairs are useless since they are so white that no amount of editing can fix it.

Hi Manja, yes it’s clear! I enjoyed them regardless. Yes, overexposure can be hard to fix unless you’re going for a bleached out effect. Usually it takes a few attempts to get a good shot anyway, I doubt you need to take any more than you are, as you have a knack for great shots!

This is maddening, and I am so sorry you’re having this problem with such a new lens. The way you displayed the images side by side REALLY shows the problem. Especially with the cloud photos. On the right: gorgeous. On the left: not worth keeping. It is such a mystery that sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. When my lens went bad, it went really bad really fast, so I wasn’t forced to waste my time trying over and over to make it work. Bless you for not going crazy. Hugs.
