Last September was such a happening month. Here it is in twenty images for my monthly Calendar series.
Let me continue right where I stopped in my previous post: I showed you our seven days together with Crystal and Pedro which were spent in Tuscany and Slovenia. Some of today’s photos are from this time too. And then my uncle came over and we went on two epic daytrips.
This was the first month when photos were taken with my new old Nikon, kindly gifted to me by Crystal. Zoom came later with a new lens. I need to remember to use the flower button more often.
Tuscany in September. Towards Santa Fiora. Santa Fiora has a fish pond instead of the main square, teeming with giant fish. The rest of the town is up the hill from where I took this photo. And then came time for Slovenia. The Soča river, or as Italians and Americans know it: the Isonzo, with the Julian Alps behind. “Here everything is so pretty,” exclaims Piran. But then adds this. Bosnian artist Safet Zec had several pieces displayed in various churches of Piran. Effective and heart-breaking. In Kranjska Gora there is this scary-sounding hotel with a fake bird. Also there. Slovenia in a picture. Back to our hood in Tuscany. I took this photo for the setting sun reflected in the door. My uncle needs so little to be happy. The zombie sunflower army and one survivor. The flower button on this camera works wonders. The first daytrip with uncle was to the murky and scenic Elsa river NW of Siena where we strolled along it for a while. In Colle di Val d’Elsa we found a magnificent restaurant on top of the city walls, Portanova Hosteria Enoteca. The day ended in San Gimignano, which was the first for both of us. The second trip was to the southeast. A scene from Montefiascone above Lake Bolsena. Next was the castle of Celleno, which has been turned into a ghost town. The ghosts are friendly and have a free museum. A detail of a has-been Celleno home. Our last destination was Sant’Angelo di Roccalvecce, a town of 1001 (well, almost) fairytale murals. This one is by Cecilia Tacconi. Uncle loved this place. My favourite: “Attention”, by Vera Bugatti. The wolf is a friend.

Nothing wrong with bitching from time to time. We’re human after all.

Is it possible for a wee pinecone to take my breath away? That was my experience when I scrolled down and it exploded onto my screen. I want to look at it again and again. Your camera may have wonderful features, but your eye brings all the artistry and seeing.

I love that zombie sunflower army, and your happy Uncle with his Sudoku. We loved Santa Fiora so much. It is one of my favourite adventures in this whole world: discovering the absolutely unexpected. We knew there was a water feature, but discovering everything about Santa Fiora was a joy. Even the lard! Pedro and I were talking about it just the other day. “Manja says, ‘oh it’s good you should try it,’ but she wouldn’t eat it!” We laughed and laughed.
