Thursday Doors 18/1/24: Hum, Croatia 1.

Welcome to the smallest town in the world. I don’t know what all the other really small towns think of this but Hum in the hills of the Istria peninsula is humming: “I’m official.”

If you look at the data, it houses 52 people on 5 square miles (13 km2). It doesn’t sound all that small to me. The town was first mentioned in documents dating from 1102, at which time it was called Cholm which is derived from the Italian name Colmo. A bell and watch tower was built in 1552 as part of the town’s defenses.

When my parents, amore, bestia and I were there last Easter, the day was not made for photography, but the limoncello was good if a bit early and there were doors, which is all that matters on Thursdays. We’ll be back here at least on one other Thursday.

  1. The town I live in is 9 square miles (23 km2) but we have about 13,000 people. I think I’d love to wander around there. It looks like you had a nice day. You certainly found some beautiful doors. That big metal arched (metal) door in the stone entrance is my favorite, but I love all the stone and doors.

  2. Enjoyed looking around the little town through your eyes, Manja. Must be fun living in a small town like that. I was amazed when I visited Cinque Terra and saw the towns there with small populations. Who knew then there could be something smaller?🙂
    P.S. Hope you’re doing well.
