It’s that time of month again when I look at the same month last year and choose 20 photos for my Calendar. Meet February, the month when spring comes to town.
The only time I ventured out of my municipality, the air by the Orbetello lagoon was full of smoke. Italians like to burn stuff so much. Still, there was one particularly nice flyer just where I left him the last time. More than one could also be observed from our garden.
If you ask last year, spring will be unlocked in exactly two weeks. The three fruit trees, which are always the first, came abloom around February 20th. I don’t count mimosa (as Leya taught me, it is actually acacia), since its yellow blossoms can often be seen as early as in January.
There was some water, some confetti, a cake base, a snail and bestia, and that was about it. Luckily February is short because we are ready for the things to come.
In current news, another gold medal for Slovenia in mixed team ski jumping with lots of disqualified jumpers in other teams: Norway, Japan, Germany, Austria… Most likely Slovenia would have won in any case because they slay but it was a pain to watch what some others were willing to do to gain some ground.
Plus, Luka and Mavs won beautifully again against Atlanta Hawks even though the referees did all they could to help them lose. Ah well. Sometimes honour and skills do win out.
The only time I reached the Orbetello lagoon all month last year, smoke from a (controlled) fire was everywhere. A lagoon abstract. Thank you for posing. I can always count on these. Taken from our garden. Spotted from the garden too. This fellow was not collaborative. It was so far and wouldn’t look. A buzzard? A harrier? The zoom on my new old camera is not as good. Mood. It required St. Valentine’s cake. February 20th 2021. This tree is always the first. Plus the train bound for Rome. Close up. Not sure, almond? Tree no. 2. Tree no. 3. Confetti in the playground. Acacia dealbata, the silver wattle, blue wattle or mimosa. A snail, bigger than those that climb up in groups in the summer in the hope to run from the heat. What did bestia find? Remains of the swamp. In the past, malaria reigned here. Maremma was a bitter land, “amara terra mia”. These days it looks pretty serene. This is how it goes. Slowly but surely. Spring is unlocked and unleashed.

You spotted some kind of Hawk or bird of prey. Spring looks pretty there in February. The ground squirrels here have woke up and are coming out of hibernation so Spring must be just around the corner although Punxsutawney Phil (a groundhog) says there’s still 6 weeks of winter left. 😀
Is that Bestia’s lead? It looks like a garden hose which he’s trying to get to his mouth for a drink. 😂

Thanks, Deborah. I had another look at bestia and indeed it looks like a hose. 😀 It’s his leash though. I hope Phil was wrong!

I was looking at your birds of prey…maybe that’s a Common Kestrel? Pretty neat and beautiful tail in any case.

Thanks for looking it up, Deborah. Maybe this article of my “hood” will be of interest to you: https://www.maremmaguide.com/birdwatching-in-maremma-tuscany.html

It looks wonderful and the terrain/ birding reserves look very much like the central Calif. region where a lot of bird and wildlife refuges are that I love.
I’d love to go birding in your part of Italy!

The lagoon abstract is pretty. It looks like chocolate and vanilla frosting swirled together. I’m hungry and it’s not quite time for supper. Everything looks like food.

Hahha, Lois, you said it! Now I can’t unsee it. Mmm, frosting. Thanks!

Bestia’s mood is how I feel about February! It’s still winter here! What kind of cake do you make for Valentine’s Day?
LikeLiked by 1 person
This was a nutella cake. Too rich. It is not a tradition but this year I’m in need of a cake again. 😀 Winter is going away, promise, Irma! 🙂

True. It’s coming over. Still mighty chilly though. Thanks, K. I’ve just submitted my poem to that challenge you alerted me to. Thanks again.

Thank you, Selma. Let’s cheer for spring! It’s still chilly here but lovely sun is starting to win. Slovenia still at 5 medals. I’ll tell you first if there is a change. 🙂

Thank you, Donna. Not quite here yet. There is a chill in the air all day long, but less and less.

Lagoon Abstract is sensational. And I fall into the comfort of Bestia in Mood. Thank you for assembling and sharing these splendid photos.

Thank you, Carol Ann. As always, it depends so much on the person how a photo touches us. The Mood photo would mean sadness to another. You see comfort. 🙂 Bestia agrees.

STUNNING shots. Love the lagoon abstract, it has such an Egon Schiele-esque quality, total nod to painting. And the minimalist blossom shots, gawjuss!

Ooo, thank you, Sunra Nina! Mr. Egon! 😮 Honoured! And gawjuss is such a great word! Did you invent it?

No, but I’ve assimilated it into my vocabulary, reserved only for very few posts 🙂

Back home people burn stuff all the time. I really hate it. Isn’t there a law against it?

I bet there are several laws, but in Italy capital trumps laws, always have. I suspect there as well. What to do?
